To mark the 50th anniversary of its current name, the National Geographic Institute is launching a brand-new anniversary website.

Although the NGI has existed in its current form since 1976, its origins date all the way back to 1831. That year, the Dépôt de la Guerre was founded with the mission of providing the army with high-quality maps. Since then, the NGI has continuously evolved. Over time, it has implemented numerous innovations and reinvented itself in its role as a federal geobroker, while continuing to play a key role in geo-intelligence.

The anniversary website is much more than a look back at the history of the NGI: it is an invitation to rediscover the history of cartography in Belgium, to better understand current challenges, and to look ahead to the future.
