This data layer represents the main roads supporting 3 to 6 million vehicles per year and involved in strategic noise mapping. This data layer derives from the European Directive 2002/49/EC - "Environmental Noise Directive" - relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise. The Directive provides for the development of strategic road noise maps. This data layer includes all the so-called main regional road sections, i.e. supporting 3 to 6 million per year. This represents approximately a cumulative length of 1575 km. Major roads supporting traffic of more than 6 million vehicles per year are not included in this map. They have been the subject of a preliminary acoustic study (see noise mapping 2006). Roads located in the major Walloon agglomerations (Liège and Charleroi) are also excluded, the latter having been the subject of a study in 2011 (2012 report). Please note that the strategic noise maps of the main roads were drawn up on the basis of source data dating from 2014 (traffic data, IPCC, MNT/MNS, etc.) or collected at the beginning of 2015. Therefore, the data layers transcribe the noise exposure from the main roads at this time period. The information was reported to the European Environment Agency in 2017 and is therefore included in the 2017 report.
