On the basis of the regional groundwater flow, several successive HCOVs are demarcated which are considered as a single entity: groundwater systems. The boundaries are based on the physical characteristics of the groundwater reservoirs (in addition to some regional and national borders). The systems are bounded by clear barriers to groundwater flow such as thick clay layers, geological boundaries, highly draining rivers, salinisation limits, ... There are six groundwater systems: - the Coastal and Polder System - the Central Flemish System - the Pedestal System - the Meuse System - the Central Kempen System - the Bruland Chalk System
