WRB Soil Units 40k: Soil map of the Flemish Region according to the international soil classification system World Reference Base on a scale of 1:40,000

Vlaams Planbureau voor Omgeving

Based on the results of an intensive soil mapping during the 1950s to 1970s, the Belgian soil map was drawn up. This Belgian soil map is based on the Belgian soil classification system. It is a national system designed exclusively for Belgian soils. For the Flemish Region, this soil map was therefore converted into WRB-2014, the 3rd edition of the international soil classification system World Reference Base. The field ‘Soil Unit’ gives the standard soil name according to WRB. By using ‘Reference Soil Groups’ (coloured surfaces) and ‘Principal Qualifiers’ (brown-lined polygons with labels), the most important information from the soil map of Belgium can be translated into the WRB system. Information on texture, drainage, soil morphology and chemical soil fertility has been retained in 4 groups of Supplementary Qualifiers. The field ‘Belgian soil type’ has been taken from the original soil map. The translation was done per soil district indicated in the field ‘Belgian_soil district’.
