Share of area occupied by above-ground artificial buildings

Julien Charlier

Land cover is defined as the "physical and biological cover of the land surface, including man-made areas, agricultural areas, forests, (semi-)natural areas, wetlands and water bodies" (European INSPIRE Directive 2007/2/EC, 2007). Land cover therefore corresponds to what covers the ground, to what is found there: a wood, a culture, a building, a public building. These are the biophysical characteristics of the soil. It must be distinguished from its use which specifies the function or use of a type of occupation. Thus, an occupation of the soil that would be "herbaceous covered" could correspond to several uses such as for example a residential garden or a pasture. More information on this distinction "[\2](\1)" This sheet concerns the indicators that provide information on land cover based on airborne data for 2018, namely: - Share of area occupied by above-ground artificial buildings - Share of surface area occupied by artificial floor covering - Share of area occupied by the railway network - Share of area occupied by bare soils - Share of surface area occupied by surface water - Share of area occupied by a rotating herbaceous canopy in the year - Share of area occupied by herbaceous cover all year round - Share of area occupied by Hardwoods (> 3m) - Share of area occupied by Hardwoods (≤3m) - Share of area occupied by Softwoods (> 3m) - Share of area occupied by Softwoods (≤3m) These indicators were produced from the land cover mapping carried out as part of the WALlonie Occupation et Utilisation du Sol (WALOUS) research grant awarded by the Walloon Region to a consortium of two universities (UCLouvain, ULB) and a public research centre of the type UAP (ISSeP).
