The term Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) covers a wide variety of organic compounds with a vapour pressure of at least 0.1 kPa at normal temperature and pressure. Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) enter the atmosphere through:• industrial process emissions• industrial and domestic use of solvents (including in paints, degreasers and degreasers) via evaporation• combustion processes• emissions from transportA number of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) are carcinogenic (benzene, vinyl chloride, 1,3-butadiene). In addition, NMVOC, as an ozone precursor, plays a role in photochemical air pollution and in the formation of secondary particulate matter. Some NMVOCs, mainly of industrial origin, cause odour nuisance.
