Acidifying deposition

Acidifying deposition is the supply of nitrogen and sulphur from the atmosphere to soil, water, vegetation, ... . Acidification affects ecosystems and reduces soil and water quality and biodiversity. Nitrogen has in addition to acidifying also fertilizing effects; Sulfur is only acidifying. The highest acidifying deposition takes place in the centre of West Flanders, N-Antwerp and NO-Limburg. Acidifying deposition has fallen by an average of 41% since 2005. In particular, there has been a sharp decrease in sulphur deposition.
