Emissions of nutrients to surface water by companies

Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij

An excess of nutrients in surface water can lead to excessive algal blooms, which, for example, greatly reduces visibility and can make oxygen management problematic.Gross emissions are discharges at the site. Net emissions take into account possible treatment at a public sewage treatment plant. The share of companies in net emissions of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to surface water is limited. Both gross and net emissions of nitrogen and phosphorus by companies have decreased, but in recent years this decline has barely continued.Within the operational discharges, trade & services has the largest share in gross emissions of nitrogen and phosphorus. Chemistry accounts for the largest share of net emissions.
