Anthropogenic radon risk zones

Openbare Vlaamse Afvalstoffenmaatschappij (OVAM)

The map shows contaminated sites that may cause significant exposure to radon. The sites are considered by the FANC (Federal Agency for Nuclear Control) as an anthropogenic radon risk zone. If a site is considered to be an anthropogenic radon risk zone, this does not necessarily mean that the building of buildings there is prohibited: however, if built on these plots, appropriate radon prevention measures and monitoring of radon concentration should be foreseen. Pollution levels measured at different sites are often limited and do not cause acute risks, with a majority of sites contaminated with radium; is the most significant risk than exposure to radon in the case of buildings on the site concerned; both jobs and housing. If excavation works are carried out on the site, protective measures must be observed – in particular to limit inhalation and ingestion of radioactive substances by workers.
